I'm a "Preferred Customer"

June 12th, 2014 at 01:37 pm

With my Discover Card. And I'd say it's almost as annoying being on the "good boy" list as it is being on the "bad boy" list. Almost, but not quite.

It seems as if the mailings are weekly now. "You are a preferred customer. You are eligible for a... home equity line of credit, or a consolidation loan, or an increase in your credit limit... This week's had something to do with student loans (I didn't open it), which I do not have, and do not need.

So, that's what I get for having a single credit card, and paying the balance off every single month. Offers for more credit.

I have to laugh reading this. Because it's actually true. These banks must have trigger alarms ringing once they see in their system that you're a 'good customer', paying your balance regularly.

It is annoying but don't mind these mails. These are just banking tricks to get your money into their banks and you/us becoming a victim of their endless credit factory.

I don't actually get too many emails from Discover, but we are getting offers of credit in the mail nearly daily. You could change your settings and email preferences and see if that makes a difference.

Well put and thanks for the laugh! I was getting 3 pieces of snail mail daily from one of the banks. I set out a shoe box and threw in all their mail for weeks. I made it a point to stop by while they were open and handed the manager the bundle corralled with an elastic and said she must find a way to stop this blizzard of envelopes. It's not totally ended mail-outs but it's better. What frosts me is that I hold stock in this bank and they waste billions with all this un-targeted barrage.

I wasn't specific in my post. These are hard copy snail mail letters. I've already set my preferences in my email account.

This way isn't a big deal, but as snafu points out, how much are they spending?

Of course, the answer is, they are spending less than what they make by attracting new customers.

What I hate almost worse than this is the barrage of 'here's some checks go spend!' letters I get from our credit card companies. My shredder stays busy, that's for sure.

When they include a postage-paid envelope, I get a kick out of sending it back with no application, but just the contents of their junk mail.
