Quote of the Day

March 29th, 2012 at 12:41 pm

I'm guessing most of you have heard about the Mega Millions jack pot - $500 million. I don't play the lottery, so I'm not familiar with Mega Millions. I have no idea how many numbers you play out of how many numbers total, but I'm guessing there are a lot of numbers to choose from.

So this "historic" jack pot has been on the news a lot over the past couple of days. It was being discussed on the morning show I listen to on the way into work. I was listening to the segment where the financial guy comes on and updates world wide market activities. His quote on the Mega Millions jackpot - (okay so maybe I'm not quoting him verbatim, this is from memory, but it's close: "The lottery is the world's most punitive tax. Fortunately, it's only levied on those who aren't very good at math."

Sums up my opinion pretty well.

I wouldn't even want to win $500 million. Holy cow - what do you even do with that??? But seriously, if someone can just quietly put it in my bank account, then whatever, but to so publicly win that kind of money would just be a nightmare. I've seen too many families destroyed fighting over $1 million. I just don't see the appeal on any level. {Technically you can take title of the money privately, but trust me, the wolves will find you and hound you}.

Of course, I have never played the lottery, and hadn't heard about the jackpot. That's how much I don't even pay any attention to that stuff.

We buy a ticket every once in awhile. Since the Powerball is now $2 per play, we buy even less. No Mega Millions in Florida so that removes the temptation.

I never play, so I don't pay attention

I recall reading statistics that most tickets are sold in the poorer soci-economic communities and postulate that the majority of buyers were low wage earners or even unemployed. The 2nd largest identified group were work relations where each participant contributed the same amount to each draw, with agreement to share any winnings. I suspect there is some level of social pressure in work groups to participate as a 'team' player.

When there are extra ordinarily large sums being advertised, sales numbers skyrocket bolstered by occasional ticket buyers, who enjoy daydreaming of super wealth for a couple of hours.

Every time I think of winning that much money I realize that I'd be so scared for my family (thinking my kids would be kidnapped, house broken into, etc.) that I wouldn't be able to enjoy it.
