Generations

July 11th, 2014 at 02:08 pm

I've noticed that a majority of the regular bloggers on this site seem to be Gen Xers, or between mid thirties and late forties in age.

Has anyone else noticed that? Am I mistaken? Or, are the blogs written by Gen Xers tend to be more the ones I follow, because I, as an Gen Xer tend to more identify with their situations in life?

I can think of several examples of regular SA bloggers who are Boomers, and a couple Millennials, but it just seems like a good majority are Xers.

Maybe because we're the ones that are at a point in life where we are in the beginning/middle of saving for retirement, kid's college, have a sizeable mortgage, etc? Or maybe it's something about our generation that draws us to blog on a site like this? Or maybe I'm mistaken.

Thoughts?

I think we are the ones in the middle of 'freaking out' and midlife crises. Smile

Well, I am almost 40 and the internet came about when I was in my late teens. My experience is that most people older than that are not that much into online forums and chat rooms. Obviously there are exceptions. (Heck, most the people I know my age don't use the internet that much socially). Of course, younger people today grew up with the internet, so I would think overall this would skew things towards the younger side. Though maybe the younger crowd is less into blogs?

I joined this site when I Was about 30 but I have *always* been very financially focused. I wish I had known about financial message boards and blogs sooner. (No idea HOW I found this place!). That said, I Was too busy working and getting my degree and license earlier on that I don't know I would have gravitated to anything like this much before age 25 or so. I wouldn't have had the time.

I don't think you are mistaken, although we do have some in their low to mid twenties that are newer. Maybe the younger crowd is vlogging...video blogging?! I'm not freaking out as Rachael said, but sharing our journey and things I've learned. I want that younger generation to see what you need to do be ready for retirement.

I was born doing WWII, What generation am I? I grew up super pooor because my dad died when I was very young and my mom had never had a job. That made me determined not to be poor all my life.

I'm not sure but I am a Millennial. Gen Xers are getting older trying to figure out retirement and kids etc. Millennials (I'm definitely on the older spectrum of the Millenials) are only getting there now. I've delayed things like having kids getting a house etc because my work situation is not steady and I know many others who are in the same place as I am. It is rare for me to know a Millenial who is in a steady job situation, can afford their own roof over their head and doesn't have a butt load of debt.

Gen Y here, just as one thing they say about Gen Y is that we are "immune to advertising and advertising gimmicks", and boy does that hold true for my wife and I! Haha!

I think maybe the youngers haven't had their debt overwhelm them yet. I mean, they're drowning, but they don't know it yet. Gen Y has been coming into that realization as they try to raise or start families in a bad economy and realize they can't afford houses because of college debt and consumer debt. Millenials are still building their debt load and mostly not thinking that far ahead. Boomers and Gen X realized a while ago and have been working to get out of debt, struggling to afford college, and trying to come up with money to care for aging parents that didn't plan for retirement. So I think that shows across the blogs here. At least that is my take on it.

I'm a a baby boomer in my 50s and I've been here for at least 5 years (longer than what my profile says as I had to delete my profile here and start over at one point, but that's a long story) but i did notice a large influx of much younger bloggers in the past year or two.

What's more interesting to me about the demographic here, apart from age, is the reason people come here. I would say that most people are here because they are struggling to overcome debt, although there may be a smaller sub-group (that includes me) of people who are just plain interested in personal finance and are more fixed on a particular goal, like retirement.
